Why the Whales Came (English Edition) An Exciting Historicaladventure From War Horse Author And Former Childrens LaureateMichael MorpurgoGracie And Her Friend Daniel Have Always Been Warned To Stay Away From The Birdman And His Side Of The Island But Then They Find A Message In The Sand And Discover The Birdman Is Not Who They Thought They Build Up A Lovely Friendship With Him, But When The Children Get Stranded On Samson Island They Dont Know Whether To Believe The Birdmans Story That The Island Is CursedSet Against The Backdrop Of The First World War, In The Tradition Of Friend Or Foe And Private Peaceful Michael Morpurgo Brings The Emotional Reality Of Conflict To Life In A Way That Is Accessible To Younger Readers Look Out For His Other Historical Adventures Including An Eagle In The Snow And Listen To The Moon Great book used with 8year olds for comprehension lessons Very well written Made for good discussion on behaviour and consequences, extending vocabulary and inference. An atmospheric and heartening read, which I and my 10 year old son loved Its geographic and historic setting, are so compelling that you will want to visit the Scilly Isles to see Samson, Heathy Hill, and Popplestones for yourself Morpurgo writes with such compassion for his fellow humankind In the current political climate of distrust for those who are different from ourselves, poverty shaming, and discrimination, it fills me with optimism that he addresses these themes in stories aimed at younger generations. This is a delightful novel about two children living on the small Scilly Isle of Bryher on the eve of the First World War, who befriend an outcast from the community, known as the Birdman, who hides a secret relating to the evacuation of the nearby island of Samson during his youth It s a lovely story, which gives a good feel for the ebb and flow of island life, and shows how communities can, at their best, pull together to achieve a common goal, but at their worst seek to scapegoat an outsider While this is nominally aimed at children, it s a great read for all ages, especially if you have been or will be going to the Scilly Isles. This book really caught my daughter s attention and she isn t the most keen reader I was happy that she wanted to read a grown up and thought provoking book. It s a must read book that you can t put down is how my 9yr old son described it It arrived quickly and was a good price The author is good and will probably order books by him A very profound book for both adults and children.Should be on all school reading lists.A G NobleKinlocheil My grand daughter requested this along with another 2 Michael Morgurgo books she had not read. Winnie the Pooh, Narnia and Harry Potter are children s books that can be enjoyed by adults This book is different in style and content but is like these books in the sense that it is fun to read as an adult The picture of island life in the early 20th century is also very interesting especially if you know the Scillies HiI loved reading this book because I love Michael Mourpurgo and the way that he writes stood that is why I love chosen a five star rating for this book.I think that Why The Whales Came is the best book he has written because it is all about adventure, friendship and understanding each other Right From the start of the book I knew that the Bridman wasn t evil because when the children go and meet him for the first time he never does anything to them. The only thing that I don t understand in this book is why it is all about war I mean I can understand way but every Michael Mourpurgo book that I have ever read has been about war apart from Running Wild That is my only bone that I wanted to pick with this book.I would recommend this book to anyone of any age that likes Michael Mourpurgo
